Voodin Consortium Lands €48M EU Grant for Automated Wooden Wind Blade Factory

The Voodin consortium has secured a €48 million EU grant to establish Spain’s inaugural automated factory for wooden wind turbine blades. This significant investment, reported by Tech.eu, underscores European support for sustainable manufacturing and renewable energy infrastructure. The new facility aims to address the environmental impact associated with traditional wind turbine components.

Europe’s commitment to clean power saw €45 billion raised for new wind projects across the region in 2025. However, this growth highlights a sustainability challenge, particularly concerning the materials and manufacturing processes of wind turbine blades. Traditional methods, largely unchanged since the 1970s, often lead to high defect rates and significant waste.

Efforts to enhance the sustainability and circularity of wind energy components are ongoing. The TURBO project, for instance, focuses on improving composite production processes for wind turbine blades to reduce defects, repair rates, and scrap. By employing advanced simulation and in-line non-destructive testing, TURBO aims to make current manufacturing more efficient and less wasteful. Complementing this, the BLADE2CIRC project is exploring bio-based approaches, researching new composite materials that combine high-strength bio-based carbon fibres with bio-based structural resins. These initiatives are crucial for designing blades with improved lifetime, efficient decommissioning, and increased circularity.

The Voodin consortium's new factory, with its focus on wooden blades and automated production, aligns with these broader European objectives to foster a more sustainable and circular economy within the renewable energy sector. It represents a concrete step towards reducing the environmental footprint of wind power generation.
