Wageningen startup raises €5M for new crop varieties

Wageningen-based agritech startup Aardaia has secured €5 million in seed funding. The round was led by Point Nine, with participation from existing investor FoodLabs. This investment supports Aardaia's focus on developing new crop varieties by utilising wild plants, addressing critical needs in sustainable agriculture.

The company's approach aligns with broader efforts to leverage the genetic diversity found in crop wild relatives (CWRs). These wild plant species are genetically related to cultivated crops and represent a rich, under-exploited resource. Their untapped diversity can significantly enhance resilience to biotic and abiotic stress, improve the nutritional quality of modern crops, and help agricultural systems adapt to challenges linked to climate change and the transition to low-input farming. For instance, the PRO-WILD project is dedicated to protecting and promoting CWRs for important crops like wheat, sugar beet, and oilseed rape, recognising their value for food security and EU farmers.

Utilising CWRs offers a crucial pathway to develop crops with improved traits, such as increased tolerance to drought or disease, and enhanced nutrient uptake, thereby reducing reliance on external inputs like fertilisers and pesticides.
