GCAP Advances Sixth-Generation Aircraft Development

The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) has progressed with a €5.3 billion Edgewing contract, advancing the development of a sixth-generation stealth combat aircraft. This international collaboration, involving Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom, targets delivery by 2035. The initiative underscores a major innovation push within the aerospace industry, aiming to integrate advanced technologies for future air superiority.

This development occurs amidst broader discussions on defence industry collaborations, as highlighted by a Euractiv report on Italy’s SAFE uncertainty clouds Meloni’s trip to Ankara, which touched upon strategic partnerships involving Italy. The drive for next-generation aircraft is also mirrored in European research projects focused on integrating advanced aerospace technologies. For instance, the SMR Aircraft Architecture and Technology Integration Project (SMR ACAP) focuses on assessing and integrating technologies at the aircraft level for ultra-efficient aircraft. This project, which concluded in June 2026, aimed to define targeted aircraft configurations with key performance features.

Similarly, the Aircraft Concepts Integration & Impact (ACI&I) project, which began in July 2026, is dedicated to providing a model-based platform to integrate and assess advanced key technologies for a next-generation Short Medium Range (SMR) aircraft. This project specifically targets achieving Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL6) by 2030 for technologies considered, making them viable to support the launch of a next-generation SMR product by 2035. These projects collectively illustrate the concerted effort across the aerospace sector to mature and integrate disruptive propulsion architectures, high aspect ratio wings, and sustainable industrialisation methods, all critical for future aircraft capabilities. The GCAP effort aligns with this broader trend of developing highly advanced, digitally integrated aircraft systems.
