European Quantum Tech Advances with Strategic Initiatives

European projects are significantly advancing quantum computing, focusing on critical areas like software development for finance, democratising hardware access, and establishing cloud-accessible infrastructure. This concerted effort underscores growing investment in deeptech.

The quantum software market is poised for substantial expansion, with estimates projecting a €1.42 billion valuation by 2027 and a compound annual growth rate of 42% over the next five years. This significant growth is fuelled by pioneering European initiatives such as SINGULARITY, which successfully developed a quantum software toolbox tailored for the finance sector. Recognised by leading institutions, this project demonstrated the potential for quantum computers to deliver value in high-impact applications.

Addressing a critical bottleneck in the nascent quantum industry, the DEMOQC project is focused on democratising quantum computing by providing scalable and customizable quantum processing units (QPUs). By reducing the substantial capital intensity typically associated with developing new quantum computers, this initiative aims to stimulate innovation beyond incumbent tech giants and university labs, ensuring a more accessible and dynamic hardware landscape.

Complementing these efforts, QCDC (Quantum Computers for Data Centers) is actively realising the first European cloud-accessible quantum computer. This project is making internationally competitive quantum computing performance available through a novel cloud platform, designed to enable the European quantum ecosystem, including software partners and customers, to thrive. The hardware, deployed in data centres, underscores a practical approach to making advanced quantum capabilities readily available.

These projects, supported by European funding, illustrate a concerted strategic investment in deeptech. They collectively address the foundational elements required for a thriving quantum industry: advanced software, accessible and scalable hardware, and robust cloud infrastructure. This integrated approach is positioning Europe as a key player in the global quantum technology race, fostering an environment where innovation can flourish and market potential can be fully realised.

What this means: Targeted European funding for projects across the quantum computing stack — from software development to hardware and cloud access — is essential for building a self-sufficient and globally competitive deeptech sector.
