European tech leaders have called for 25% of the EU budget to be allocated towards securing Europe's energy and digital future, according to a recent report by Tech leaders call for 25% of EU budget to secure Europe’s energy and digital future. This urgent appeal comes as Europe faces significant energy market instability, having already incurred an estimated €50 billion in additional fuel costs since the Strait of Hormuz crisis began. The leaders emphasize the critical need for robust investment in digital infrastructure to enhance energy security and facilitate the broader energy transition.

The call for increased funding aligns with ongoing EU initiatives aimed at digitalizing the energy system. Projects like TwinEU, which launched in January 2024, are developing a federated ecosystem of digital twin solutions to improve the resilience and cost-effectiveness of energy infrastructure. This project specifically addresses the critical need to increase renewable energy penetration and make the grid more robust. Similarly, EU-DREAM, starting in July 2024, focuses on accelerating the uptake of digital services to empower consumers and communities in the energy transition, developing next-generation energy services tested across six EU countries.

Further efforts include DSO4DT, a project set to begin in January 2025, which aims to accelerate the adoption of Digital Twins of the European electricity grid. These projects collectively highlight the strategic importance of digitalization in achieving Europe's energy objectives. The proposed 25% budget allocation would significantly bolster such initiatives, ensuring dedicated resources for both digital innovation and energy independence. The tech community's stance underscores a perceived gap in current funding levels relative to the scale of the challenges.

What this means: A substantial increase in EU budget allocation to digital and energy sectors could accelerate the deployment of critical technologies and infrastructure, strengthening Europe's strategic autonomy and resilience against future market shocks.
