Europe Shifts Focus to Climate Adaptation

Ukraine joined the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to battle French wildfires, a concrete sign of escalating environmental crises across Europe. This immediate crisis highlights a policy shift towards climate adaptation, moving beyond traditional climate action. The European Green Deal now faces re-evaluation, emphasizing urgent crisis management and resilience against immediate environmental threats.

Several Horizon Europe projects are directly addressing this pressing need. The CLIMATEFIT project focuses on bridging the resilience financing gap, aiming to scale up climate-resilient investments by attracting both public and private funding. This project implements four large-scale demonstrators of resilient innovations for Climate Change Adaptation, promoting the transfer of know-how and innovative solutions to eight twin regions through mutual-learning activities. The P2R (Pathways2Resilience) project takes an innovative systemic approach to regional climate resilience, advocating for a radical step-up in attention to current and future climate impacts. It moves beyond stand-alone risk reduction projects to adopt a transformative approach, aligning with the Mission Adaptation and European Green Deal's systemic goals.
