EU Eyes Electric Vehicle Batteries For Grid Storage
The European Commission plans to leverage the expanding pool of electric vehicle batteries for on-grid energy storage. This initiative is central to its electrification action plan and efforts to manage electricity bills.

The European Commission intends to utilise the increasing number of electric vehicle (EV) batteries for grid energy storage solutions, a key component of the EU's electrification action plan aimed at managing electricity bills. This strategy supports the rapid decarbonisation of industry through electrification and the growth of renewables.
Research into advanced battery management systems (BMS) is crucial for this integration. The PHYBATT project is developing algorithms and models for BMS to ensure EV batteries operate safely across various modes, including Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) applications. These capabilities support grid functions like fast charging, peak shaving, and ancillary services, enhancing techno-economic offerings.
Complementing this, the AGISTIN project focuses on enabling industrial grid users to rapidly deploy renewables by integrating innovative energy storage technologies. This initiative addresses the need for short-duration flexibility and stability on the grid, aiming to reduce the impact of new, large demands and lower overall costs.
Further supporting EV integration into the grid, the AHEAD project is creating a simulation environment. This tool predicts optimal locations for EV charging stations and optimises the usage of power grid resources and charging infrastructure in both urban and rural areas, leveraging AI models for holistic integration approaches.
What this means: The EU's focus on integrating EV batteries into the grid signals a strategic shift towards more flexible and resilient energy systems. These projects demonstrate a concerted effort to develop the technological and infrastructural foundations necessary for this transition, addressing both operational efficiency and grid stability.
