Strong by Form, a deeptech company based in Madrid, has successfully raised €5.8 million in a Series A funding round, as reported by Tech.eu. The funding will be used to further develop its high-performance wood-based materials, which the company aims to position as a sustainable alternative to conventional concrete in the construction sector. Strong by Form, originally founded in Chile, is focused on reimagining wood as a high-performance construction material.
The construction industry faces significant challenges in reducing its environmental footprint, being responsible for 40% of CO2 emissions and 35% of waste generated. Initiatives like Strong by Form align with broader European efforts to innovate in this area. For instance, the BIOBUILD project aims to develop fully bio-based building materials with thermal energy storage, replacing products with high environmental footprints. Similarly, TIMBERHAUS is dedicated to creating climate-smart, circular, and sustainable solutions for wood use in construction, directly addressing the sector's CO2 emissions and material consumption.
Further research, such as the SMART-NRG project, also explores biomass-derived phase change materials for thermal energy storage in buildings, highlighting a concerted push towards sustainable alternatives. These efforts collectively aim to enhance energy efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the built environment, fostering a shift away from traditional, resource-intensive materials.
What this means: The investment in Strong by Form underscores a growing market demand for sustainable construction materials and deeptech solutions that can significantly reduce the environmental impact of buildings.
