European tech leaders are advocating for a substantial allocation of the EU budget, proposing that 25% be dedicated to safeguarding Europe's energy and digital future. This call, detailed in a recent signal from Tech leaders call for 25% of EU budget to secure Europe’s energy and digital future, comes as Europe faces pressing energy security concerns. The continent has reportedly spent an additional €50 billion on fuel since the Strait of Hormuz crisis began, without securing new supplies, underscoring the critical need for strategic investment in resilient infrastructure and innovative solutions.

The proposed budget allocation aligns with ongoing EU efforts to bolster digital and energy capabilities. Projects like TwinEU are already working to address the energy transition by developing a federated ecosystem of digital twin solutions across Europe. TwinEU aims to increase renewable penetration and enhance infrastructure resilience and cost-effectiveness, recognising digital twins as a key asset for operational coordination among system operators and market participants.

Furthering the digital transformation within the energy sector, EU-DREAM brings together energy industry and research partners. This project focuses on accelerating innovation in digital tools and promoting the effective uptake of digital services, directly supporting the EU Action Plan on the Digitalisation of the Energy System. It aims to develop next-generation energy services and solutions, tested across six EU countries, to empower consumers and communities in the energy transition. Similarly, DSO4DT is focused on accelerating the adoption of Digital Twins for the European electricity grid, an essential step in modernising energy infrastructure.

These initiatives underscore the EU's commitment to leveraging digital innovation for energy security and sustainability. The tech leaders' proposal highlights the perceived necessity for increased public funding to escalate these efforts, particularly given the geopolitical and economic pressures impacting Europe's energy landscape.

What this means: The push for a quarter of the EU budget to be ring-fenced for digital and energy initiatives signals a strong belief among tech leaders that significant public investment is crucial to address Europe's strategic vulnerabilities and drive future growth.
