German deeptech firm INLEAP Photonics has secured EUR20 million in seed funding, as reported by INLEAP Photonics raises €20M to expand laser counter-drone systems. This investment aims to scale the company's laser-based counter-drone technology, specifically targeting critical infrastructure protection and defence applications. The funding underscores continued venture capital interest in European defence innovation.

The core of INLEAP Photonics' work involves advanced laser systems. Related European initiatives have previously explored sophisticated laser applications. The CORDIS project inPhocal, for instance, focused on developing enhanced laser beam technology and new optical systems for industrial processing applications, demonstrating prior EU investment in high-precision photonics. Similarly, the project FSOCFORSAR investigated the optimisation of free space optical communication link-based drones for search and rescue operations, highlighting the convergence of drone technology and optical communication, albeit in a different context.

The increasing sophistication of drone technology, both for civilian and military uses, necessitates robust counter-measures. Laser-based systems offer a precise and effective method for neutralising unmanned aerial vehicles, making them a critical component of modern defence strategies. This latest funding round positions INLEAP Photonics to accelerate the deployment of its solutions, meeting a growing demand for advanced protective capabilities across Europe.

What this means: This significant seed investment highlights the strategic importance of deeptech solutions in addressing contemporary security challenges. It signals a strong market belief in laser technology's potential to provide effective counter-drone defence, attracting substantial private capital into the European defence sector.
