Oxford-founded energy technology company Gyre Energy secured over $1.3 million in investment and grant funding. This capital will advance its AI-driven thermal energy storage solution for industrial cooling, aiming to reduce costs and energy demand. The funding supports clean energy innovation and industrial decarbonisation efforts within the EU market, according to the news signal titled Gyre Energy raises $1.3M to cut industrial cooling costs with AI and thermal storage.
Industrial processes often generate significant waste heat, contributing to energy inefficiency. Decoupling energy generation from production is crucial for utilising intermittent renewable sources and recovering waste heat. The EU faces substantial energy waste from heat sources, with an estimated 300 TWh lost annually due to a lack of cost-efficient storage solutions.
Related EU-funded initiatives address similar challenges. The Muspell project, running from 2023 to 2027, focuses on developing a medium to long-term thermal energy storage system with embedded heat pumping capabilities. Its objective includes enabling the use of intermittent energy sources by storing thermal energy during peak production and improving energy efficiency by rerouting industrial waste heat. Similarly, the KRAFTBLOCK project, which concluded in 2024, developed a scalable, modular, high-temperature thermal energy and power storage system. This system, produced from upcycled industrial by-products, aimed to make economic energy storage and conversion affordable, targeting the vast amounts of heat wasted in the EU.
