London-based startup Arrakis has raised nearly $40 million in funding within three months of its emergence. The company aims to develop crucial infrastructure for effective and scalable artificial intelligence solutions.

London-based AI deployment startup Arrakis has secured nearly $40 million in funding since its emergence three months ago. Backed by leaders from OpenAI and Datadog, the company is focused on developing core infrastructure essential for the effective and scalable deployment of artificial intelligence solutions.
The investment highlights the ongoing industry-wide challenge of moving AI models from development to practical, large-scale application. While AI models continue to advance rapidly, their deployment often faces significant hurdles related to efficiency, cost, and compatibility across diverse hardware environments. This is particularly true for cutting-edge models like large language models (LLMs) and for applications requiring real-time, energy-efficient processing at the edge.
Addressing these complexities, prior initiatives have sought to bridge the gap between AI models and hardware. For example, the ROOFLINE project, funded by HORIZON, aims to transform edge AI with a breakthrough Software Development Kit (SDK). This SDK is designed to overcome the challenges of deploying next-generation AI models at the edge, where existing tools often fail to support the latest models, lack flexibility across various chip architectures, and underutilize chip capabilities, leading to inefficient and costly deployments.
Similarly, the NR1 project, also a HORIZON initiative, tackles the problem of implementing scalable AI deployment by developing an AI-centric Server-on-Chip solution and an accompanying SDK. This project specifically targets the limitations of current AI inference architectures, which are deemed unsuitable for hyperscale computations due to deployment complexity and high total cost of ownership. The NR1 solution seeks to enable the deployment of AI applications at scale, unlocking their full potential.
Arrakis's funding underscores the persistent demand for robust and flexible infrastructure that can streamline the operationalisation of AI. As the number and complexity of AI models grow, alongside the diversity of deployment environments from data centres to edge devices, the need for advanced deployment tools becomes even more critical.
