ITER Director Cautions Against Fusion Hype

Pietro Barabaschi, Director-General of the ITER project, has advised against "fusion hype," advocating for a "grounded approach" to nuclear fusion development. Speaking to INTERVIEW: Don’t fall for the fusion hype, says head of world’s biggest experimental reactor, Barabaschi acknowledged the significant scientific and technical barriers that must be overcome to achieve continuous fusion reactions. He affirmed these challenges are solvable, but only through sustained, realistic research efforts.

Despite almost a century of global investment in nuclear fusion research, continuous fusion reactions have not yet been consistently achieved. This is due to the extremely challenging scientific and technical barriers inherent in the process. Barabaschi's call for a pragmatic outlook underscores the scale of the remaining work, even as the ITER project continues its development as the world’s biggest experimental reactor.

European projects are actively pursuing innovative solutions to these complex problems. The CFE-NANO project, for example, is developing a fast-track to commercialise fusion energy. This initiative builds on laser-fusion concepts, utilising diode-pumped laser systems and nanostructured fuel targets. The objective is to bypass main problems of traditional fusion concepts, aiming to achieve energy gain for clean and competitive energy.

Another Horizon-funded effort, the V4F project, is focused on demonstrating a new technology for unprecedented control over interactions with specially synthesised targets. This aims to significantly improve the energy balance of aneutronic fusion reactions, mitigating instabilities found in conventional fusion. Such research highlights the diverse approaches being taken to tackle fusion's complexities.

What this means: A measured perspective is crucial for nuclear fusion's long-term success. Continued, focused investment in projects addressing specific technical barriers, rather than succumbing to exaggerated timelines, will be key to unlocking fusion's potential as a sustainable energy source.
