This surge, with the EU taking 97% of the Yamal hub's exports, highlights ongoing European energy dependence and provides substantial revenue to the Kremlin, according to reporting by Euractiv. This trend runs counter to goals for energy security and the broader objectives of the REPowerEU plan, which aims to reduce reliance on Russian fossil fuels.
