The transition to a low-carbon economy is an operational imperative, with companies like Sappi adopting practical, scalable interventions to bolster both environmental performance and business resilience. As explored in Beyond Fossil Thinking: Electrifying Our Future Resilience, Sappi's decarbonisation journey focuses on operational efficiency improvements and fuel switching, particularly through increased electrification. This strategic shift aims to electrify future resilience in industrial processes.
High-temperature processes in energy-intensive industries are a significant focus for decarbonisation efforts. The ELECTRA project, for instance, is demonstrating electric heating as a substitute for fossil fuels in the cement, lime, and pulp industries. This initiative aims to validate emission-free, electrically heated production processes capable of reaching temperatures up to 2000°C. By using low-emission electricity and capturing carbon dioxide, it seeks to achieve near-zero or even negative carbon dioxide emissions in cement and lime production.
Similarly, the ELITHE project supports the decarbonisation of the ceramic industry by demonstrating sustainable and cost-effective pathways to electrify high-temperature thermal processes, including melting, calcination, and firing. This project is crucial for the EU's 2050 climate neutrality target, addressing a sector responsible for a large portion of greenhouse gas emissions. It will demonstrate various electric furnace technologies, such as frit smelters, microwave-powered calciners, and hybrid brick firing kilns.
These efforts are part of a broader drive to decarbonise hard-to-abate sectors, as recognised by projects like PARADISE. Foundation industries, including cement, steel, glass, and ammonia, rely on inherent high-temperature processes. Decarbonisation is technically feasible through a combination of solutions, with electrification emerging as a key pathway to replace fossil fuel combustion with cleaner energy sources.
What this means: Industrial companies must integrate electrification and fuel switching into their long-term strategies to achieve environmental performance goals and ensure business resilience in a low-carbon economy. Research and innovation projects are actively developing and demonstrating the technologies needed for this transition.
