Europe's AI Vulnerability: Geopolitical Risks Threaten Innovation

Concerns are escalating in Europe over potential restrictions on access to leading Chinese AI models. Such a development could significantly impede European AI innovation and undermine digital sovereignty, exposing geopolitical risks within global technology supply chains. Europe has been actively developing its own robust AI ecosystem to foster scientific excellence and maintain competitiveness.

For instance, the AI4EUROPE project is building an AI on-demand platform. This platform aims to support research excellence across Europe, serving as a community resource that facilitates experimentation, knowledge sharing, and the development of state-of-the-art solutions. The initiative is a cornerstone of Europe's AI strategy, which seeks to create a research environment consistent with fundamental ethical values. Its operations commenced in July 2022 and are set to conclude by December 2025.

Complementing these efforts, the dAIEDGE project focuses on establishing a network of excellence for distributed, trustworthy, efficient, and scalable AI at the Edge. Launched in September 2023 and running until August 2026, dAIEDGE's vision is to strengthen and support the dynamic European edge and distributed Artificial Intelligence ecosystem. This is deemed essential for the growth and competitiveness of European industrial sectors, reinforcing research and innovation value chains to accelerate digital and green transitions through advanced edge AI technologies. These projects underscore Europe's commitment to cultivating its own AI capabilities and reducing dependency on external technological powers.
