European tech companies secured €3.2 billion across 165 funding deals in August 2026, marking a significant slowdown in investment activity. This figure represents a 63% reduction compared to July, when €8.6 billion was invested across 267 rounds, as highlighted by Tech.eu on August European tech funding falls 63% as dealmaking slows. The sharp decline indicates a more cautious environment for venture capital and startup financing across the continent.

This dip in funding occurs despite ongoing efforts to strengthen the European tech ecosystem and address long-standing scaling challenges. Projects like Connect2Scale aim to bridge investment gaps and foster cross-border opportunities. This initiative specifically focuses on transferring knowledge from venture capital firms to business angels to harmonise investment cycles and introduce new avenues for growth for European startups. The project involves partnerships between business angel networks in Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Slovenia, along with supporting organisations like the European Business Angel Network. Such collaborative efforts are crucial for enabling startup growth through joint efforts and leveraging diverse competences.

Furthermore, the VENTURES THRIVE programme has previously addressed the systemic barriers European startups encounter when scaling. It noted issues like market fragmentation and the extended time deeptech ventures require to achieve maturity, which often makes investment riskier. This programme specifically worked to support deeptech startups in the European Widening area, aiming to translate high performance in research into thriving commercial ventures. Similarly, the EIC Scaling Club is dedicated to growing Europe’s tech success stories by connecting 100 selected deep-tech scale-ups with active investors, corporations, and mentors. Its objective is to develop market opportunities and ensure these companies contribute to a better world.

What this means: The August funding figures signal a period of increased caution in European tech investment. While strategic initiatives continue to build a robust foundation for innovation and growth, the immediate future may see companies and investors navigating a more conservative dealmaking landscape. This underscores the importance of continued support for cross-border investment and scaling programmes.
