Swedish deeptech company Solinide Photonics has secured €4 million in seed funding, as reported by Tech.eu. This capital will accelerate the commercialisation of its silicon nitride (SiN) photonic integrated circuit technology, vital for improving efficiency in AI data centres and preparing for scalable manufacturing. The investment comes as the demand for advanced computing solutions continues to grow, particularly within the artificial intelligence sector.

Photonic integrated circuits are gaining prominence for their potential to overcome the limitations of conventional electronic processors, especially in terms of bandwidth and energy efficiency. Projects like CoMiPCE have highlighted the promise of photonic integrated circuits for developing advanced AI models. These circuits leverage the inherent benefits of light, such as high bandwidth, low latency, and superior energy efficiency, to process information.

The commercialisation efforts by Solinide Photonics align with broader developments in the field. The QPIC1550 project, for example, focuses on creating quantum photonic integrated circuit platforms at 1550 nm, integrating various materials on SiN PICs to enable on-demand single photons and entangled photon pairs. This platform aims to revolutionise quantum photonics with compatibility for existing optical fibre networks. Similarly, the RaPPIC project explores rapid programmable photonic integrated circuits, aiming to enhance their application in computing by improving programmability.

Solinide's focus on SiN technology positions it within a critical area of innovation. Silicon nitride offers advantages in terms of low loss and high integration density, making it suitable for high-performance photonic devices. The seed funding will support the company's transition from development to market, addressing the increasing need for energy-efficient hardware in AI infrastructure.

What this means: Solinide Photonics' new funding round underscores the growing investor confidence in deeptech solutions that tackle the energy consumption and performance bottlenecks in AI data centres, particularly through advanced photonic technologies.
