European tech firms have secured over €763 million in funding deals this week, alongside more than 10 M&A transactions. This activity signals sustained investor confidence in the sector. Notable among these deals, Lovable raised $400 million, and Duolingo acquired Animade, as reported in a Lovable raises $400M, Duolingo acquires Animade, and Isembard is a politician’s wet dream signal.
The deeptech sector, in particular, continues to attract significant attention, despite inherent challenges within the European market. European startups often encounter barriers when scaling, largely due to the cultural, legal, and economic fragmentation across the continent. While the EU demonstrates high performance in research and development, this prowess does not always translate proportionally into thriving commercial ventures. For deeptech startups, a key challenge is the lengthy time needed to reach a maturity level adequate for adoption, making investment inherently risky.
To address these systemic issues, initiatives have been launched to support deeptech commercialization. The VENTURES THRIVE project, for instance, focused on deeptech startup support to facilitate ventures thriving, particularly in the European Widening area. Running until October 2024, it aimed to overcome scaling barriers through open innovation, venture building, business angels, and comprehensive business coaching and mentoring. These efforts were critical in connecting entrepreneurs and improving research exploitation.
Building on such foundations, the ACCEND project, which began in January 2025, is focused on accelerating European deeptech scale-ups. Its overarching goal is to establish capabilities and processes for impactful cross-border startup accelerator programmes. This initiative aims to create a long-term ecosystem offering diverse deeptech acceleration services, including support in access to finance, advisory on testbeds and living labs for business development, matchmaking with key public procurers of innovation, and global growth coaching.
What this means: Continued robust funding in European tech, combined with dedicated support programmes like VENTURES THRIVE and ACCEND, indicates a strategic push to mature the region's deeptech ecosystem and overcome historical scaling challenges, fostering greater commercial success for innovative ventures.
