Open Standards and Data Portability Key to Cloud Flexibility and Interoperability

A recent Euractiv policy discussion, The Flexibility of the Cloud, highlighted the ongoing importance of open standards and data portability in cloud computing. The discussion underscored how open standards facilitate the movement of data between various cloud providers and on-premises infrastructure. This flexibility is increasingly vital as emerging AI technologies integrate further into cloud environments, adapting to evolving needs.

Europe is actively pursuing initiatives to strengthen its position in this domain. The O-CEI project, for instance, aims to accelerate the uptake of innovative Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions, promoting open standards for virtualisation and interoperability. It seeks to bolster Europe's competitiveness and open strategic autonomy through cross-domain data sharing and minimising energy footprints across eight real-world pilots.

Similarly, HIGHER focuses on developing and validating open-source designs for high-density rack-scale systems. This project, involving 11 partners from industry and academia, supports cloud and edge services using standards-based data center environments, incorporating ARM RHEA2, RISC-V EPAC, and RISC-V EUPilot processors.

Another key initiative, OpenContinuum, addresses the coordination and support of the Cloud-Edge-IoT domain by building an integrated, open ecosystem. This project emphasises Open Source and Open Standards to foster European prosperity in the Cloud-Edge-IoT sector and the wider data economy, focusing on the supply-side of the computing continuum. These projects collectively aim to ensure seamless data movement and technological adaptation, which are critical for the resilience of the digital economy.

What this means: Policy efforts and research initiatives are converging to establish a robust framework for cloud computing, prioritising open standards and interoperability. This strategic focus is essential to empower organisations with technological choice and to secure Europe's digital autonomy in an era increasingly defined by AI and distributed computing.
