Lithuania is integrating artificial intelligence into its sensor networks to improve border surveillance, addressing defence vulnerabilities exposed by drone incursions. This strategic move aims to reduce reliance on costly traditional systems.

Lithuania is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance its border surveillance capabilities, directly addressing defence gaps highlighted by recent drone incursions. This integration of AI into existing sensor networks is designed to improve monitoring and reduce the country's dependence on more expensive, traditional defence systems. The move aligns with a broader trend across the European Union towards advanced national security strategies.
The EU has seen a surge in fixed border surveillance solutions, yet evolving threats necessitate more dynamic responses. Projects like BorderForce are developing flexible systems that extend automated border surveillance through increased situational awareness. These initiatives include self-sufficient, transportable Command and Control Stations equipped with versatile surveillance towers featuring anti-drone capabilities, integrating data from autonomous monitoring sensors and UAV systems. Similarly, the SEAGUARD project aims to enhance sea environmental awareness and guard functions using unmanned AI robotic detection. Its objective is to deter and monitor irregular border crossings across external land and maritime borders, making surveillance capabilities interoperable, scalable, flexible, and relocatable across member states. This project specifically targets the need for better situational awareness technologies in response to rapidly shifting threats.
Further demonstrating this focus, the AI4COPSEC project aims to demonstrate the potential of advanced machine learning and GeoAI models. These models are designed to provide relevant intelligence, enhancing existing Copernicus Security Service products and creating new services to support operations like irregular migration detection. Such advancements are instrumental in supporting the European Union’s security, safety, and law enforcement commitments.
What this means: The adoption of AI by Lithuania signifies a strategic shift in national security. By leveraging artificial intelligence for drone defence and border monitoring, member states can create more adaptable and cost-effective security infrastructures, moving beyond static solutions to address complex, evolving threats more dynamically. This approach could set a precedent for other EU nations facing similar challenges.
