AI Tools Advance Lung Disease Diagnosis
The integration of artificial intelligence into medical diagnostics is poised to transform lung disease management. New AI-powered tools are emerging to accelerate complex assessments and enable more personalised treatment strategies.

The application of artificial intelligence in medical diagnostics is expanding, particularly in lung disease analysis. This trend promises significant efficiency gains in healthcare delivery, with new tools designed to streamline complex assessments and personalise treatment pathways.
One initiative, the LungQ-Care project, aims to transform an innovative thoracic AI imaging system into an end-to-end clinical decision support system. Supported by EIC funding, its objective is to facilitate personalised lung treatment decisions by enabling radiologists to quantify medical imaging and disease phenotypes. This system delivers structured analyses to lung doctors, empowering them to interpret medical imaging effectively and offer personalised treatments for optimal patient outcomes. The project, with a total cost of €4,756,250, is led by a single organisation and is set to conclude in September 2025.
Complementing this effort, the AI4LUNGS project focuses on developing and validating novel AI-based tools and computational models. These tools are designed to improve patient stratification, optimising the diagnosis and treatment of both infectious and non-infectious respiratory diseases. AI4LUNGS integrates multi-modal data into existing clinical pathways to support clinicians in decision-making throughout the patient journey, from initial suspicion to diagnosis and treatment planning. This project involves 18 organisations and has a total cost of €6,937,771.25, running until June 2027.
The broader strategic importance of AI in healthcare is also underscored by initiatives such as the UK government AI Taskforce launches, recently established to drive overall AI strategy within the government.
What this means: The ongoing development of AI-powered solutions like LungQ-Care and AI4LUNGS signals a shift towards more precise, efficient, and personalised approaches to diagnosing and treating lung conditions. These advancements hold potential to reduce the time required for complex assessments and improve patient care outcomes.
