European deeptech initiatives are advancing, particularly in the critical field of fusion energy, underscoring the continent's commitment to clean and competitive energy solutions. Projects like CFE-NANO are pursuing a rapid path to commercial fusion energy, building on advancements such as the energy gain demonstrated at the National Ignition Facility in 2022. This project, which aims to achieve climate targets and maintain industrial value creation in Europe, focuses on laser-fusion concepts with nanostructured targets and mixed fuels.
Furthering this ambition, the V4F project is developing new technologies for unprecedented control over interactions with specially synthesized targets, aiming to significantly improve the energy balance of aneutronic fusion reactions. Its work involves advanced simulations and pioneering experiments in high-energy matter interactions, with the potential to increase alpha-particle yields and mitigate instabilities in conventional fusion. To support the broader ecosystem, the GO4FUSION project is actively laying the groundwork for a robust, collaborative European fusion energy community. This initiative is preparing for the establishment of a Public-Private Partnership to facilitate funding for industrial and R&D activities, consolidating the European Fusion Stakeholder Network and creating an industry-led association.
