Danish AI startup Velatir has secured €5 million in seed funding to expand its AI infrastructure platform throughout Europe. The investment, co-led by Spintop Ventures, aims to bolster the continent's capacity for AI processing, aligning with broader European initiatives to cultivate a competitive AI ecosystem.
This funding underscores a continuing trend of investment in foundational AI capabilities across Europe. Public and private efforts are converging to establish robust infrastructure and nurture advanced AI development. For instance, the IT4LIA project, with a total cost of €30 million and an EC maximum contribution of €15 million, is establishing an AI Factory in Italy. This project leverages EUROHPC LEONARDO and TECNOPOLO BOLOGNA assets to catalyse the creation and growth of a more competitive AI ecosystem, both in Italy and the EU. Similarly, the AI-AT initiative in Austria is building state-of-the-art supercomputing infrastructure for powerful, secure, and economically viable AI applications. Funded by the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, AI-AT makes a central contribution to Europe's competitiveness and innovation capacity in artificial intelligence.
These national efforts complement broader European platforms like AI4EUROPE, which acts as an AI on-demand platform designed to support research excellence in Europe. With an EC maximum contribution of nearly €9 million, AI4EUROPE facilitates experimentation, knowledge sharing, and the development of state-of-the-art solutions and technologies for the research community. Such initiatives are crucial for advancing the vision of a unified commitment at all government levels and fostering scientific excellence consistent with fundamental ethical values.
Private funding also reflects this drive to enhance core AI capabilities. A recent example saw Solinide Photonics close €4 million in seed funding to commercialise its silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit technology for AI data centres. This illustrates the ongoing investment in critical components and scalable manufacturing for AI infrastructure across the continent.
What this means: Velatir's funding contributes to Europe's strategic goal of strengthening its AI infrastructure, ensuring the continent can support advanced AI development and applications with robust processing capabilities.
