Swedish deeptech company Solinide has secured €4 million in seed funding to commercialise its silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit technology, as reported by Solinide closes €4M to commercialise photonic chips for AI data centres. These chips are designed to improve energy efficiency and performance in AI data centres, addressing the escalating demand for high-performance computing solutions.
The company's focus on silicon nitride photonic integrated circuits aligns with ongoing European research into advanced photonics for data processing. Projects like NEWPhotonics have previously explored integrated photonic circuits and all-optical chip architectures to reduce energy consumption and enhance capacity within hyperscale data centres. Similarly, QPIC1550 aims to establish a universal quantum photonic integrated circuit platform at 1550nm by integrating various materials on SiN PICs, demonstrating silicon nitride's versatility in advanced photonic applications. Another initiative, EXCITE, is developing a scalable field-programmable photonic gate array platform specifically for photonic chip development and data centre switch applications, underscoring the critical need for photonic solutions in modern data infrastructure.
Solinide's technology targets the limitations of conventional electronics, which are struggling to keep pace with the exponential growth in data traffic, compute load, and signal processing requirements. By leveraging photonic chips, the company aims to offer a more sustainable and powerful infrastructure capable of handling the intensive demands of AI workloads. The commercialisation of these energy-efficient solutions is crucial for the continued expansion and operational sustainability of AI-driven computing.
What this means: This funding round advances the deployment of next-generation photonic solutions, which are critical for managing the energy demands and computational intensity of future AI data centres.
