Efferon advances sepsis treatment research

Biotech firm Efferon is advancing research to address sepsis, a critical medical emergency. The company is described as "selling time" in the race to treat the condition. Sepsis is a global health challenge, accounting for around 20% of deaths worldwide, with a 26% mortality rate in humans. This severe organ dysfunction is triggered by the body's deleterious inflammatory response to infection.

A significant contribution to sepsis pathogenesis comes from an overwhelming production of proinflammatory mediators, often called a "cytokine storm". Projects like TANK_Sepsis are investigating ways to limit this pathogenesis by targeting amino acid uptake into Natural Killer (NK) cells. While NK cells are vital for host innate responses, they also contribute to tissue damage during bacterial sepsis. There is a pressing need for new target therapies to dampen this immunopathogenesis while still allowing bacterial clearance.

Current challenges in managing sepsis include a lack of reliable biomarkers for accurate diagnosis. For example, the SepBiEV-D project aims to evaluate extracellular vesicles as sources of novel biomarkers. Effective treatment is also hampered by the misuse of antimicrobial drugs, leading to resistant bacterial pathogens, high risks of infection recurrence, and increased patient mortality. The ECLectic project is focused on developing fast and reliable sensor systems for early sepsis diagnosis to counter these issues.

Efferon's approach aims to provide crucial time for patient treatment by addressing the body's harmful response to infection. This strategy is vital for improving outcomes, particularly in cases of multi-organ failure, by mitigating the rapid progression of the disease and its severe complications.
