This acquisition highlights a growing trend towards deep digitalization within industrial biotechnology. European initiatives, such as the BIOINDUSTRY 4.0 project, are already focused on promoting deep digitalization of industrial biotechnology to foster smart biomanufacturing. This project, which began in January 2023 and is set to conclude in December 2026, seeks to improve R&D efficiency, reduce time-to-market, and lower costs by integrating advanced digital technologies like artificial intelligence, digital twins, and decision support systems into bio-processes. The objective is to drive distributed, autonomous, and highly adaptable production systems, which aligns directly with the capabilities Again and Genomatica are now combining.

Industrial biotechnology is recognised as a Key Enabling Technology for the circular bio-economy and industrial renewal, forming a vital part of the EU’s strategy to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Disruptive innovations are crucial to significantly increase the efficiency of bio-based processes for chemical production. The TRANSMETECH project, for instance, has explored novel metabolic engineering strategies to enhance the productivity of microbial cell factories, demonstrating the need for continuous advancements in the field. Such projects underscore the importance of efficiency gains in bio-based processes, which the integration of AI and scaled biomanufacturing aims to deliver.

The merger represents a significant strategic move in the deeptech sector. By combining AI-driven discovery with established industrial-scale biomanufacturing, the unified entity is positioned to streamline the journey from novel biological insights to commercially viable sustainable products.
