Belgium and Greece Advocate Coordinated EU Drug Pricing and Biotech Growth

Belgium is advocating for a harmonized European approach to medicine pricing, a move spurred by demands from the United States. Concurrently, Greece is pushing for an accelerated scale-up of the biotech sector within the European Union. These discussions underscore the ongoing debate surrounding pharmaceutical policy and the funding of healthcare innovation across the bloc.

Belgian Health Minister Frank Vandenbroucke emphasized the necessity of a coordinated EU stance on medicine pricing during a meeting of the Employment, Social Policy, Health and Consumer Affairs Council (EPSCO). Vandenbroucke highlighted that individual member states negotiating separately with the US weakens the collective European position. He stressed that a unified front is crucial for effective engagement with international partners and for ensuring equitable access to affordable medicines within the EU.

Meanwhile, Greek Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis called for urgent action to boost the European biotech industry. Georgiadis urged the swift adoption of a proposed Biotech Act, arguing it is essential for the EU to remain competitive globally and to foster innovation in healthcare. He noted that the bloc's current pace in scaling up biotech initiatives is insufficient, risking a widening gap with other major players in the sector.
