EU Policy Shifts to Bolster Local Health Systems, Move from Aid

The European Union is implementing a strategic shift in its health policy, moving away from traditional aid dependency to strengthen local health systems. This new approach aims to build resilience within public health infrastructure.

A key initiative supporting this transition is the Health Economics for Policy Impact (HEPI) project. Commencing on 2025-01-01 and running until 2027-12-31, HEPI aims to integrate health economics research between Europe and Africa, promoting better integration of research into policy processes. With an EU contribution of €1,499,998.33, the project directly aligns with the EU’s strategy for sustainable growth and governance, specifically in population health. It involves 11 organisations, working to enhance scientific integration and policy impact in health economics.

Further reinforcing this strategic direction is the European Partnership on Transforming Health and Care Systems (THCS). Launched on 2023-01-01 and concluding on 2029-12-31, THCS addresses common challenges faced by European health and care systems. It seeks harmonised and coordinated solutions, bringing together 63 organisations to create synergies, coordinate Research and Innovation actions, and facilitate the digitisation of health and care services. With an EU contribution of €91,574,573, the THCS partnership aims to foster more sustainable and efficient health systems through innovative, knowledge-driven solutions.

These projects underscore a broader EU commitment to fostering self-reliant health ecosystems. By investing in integrated research and systemic transformations, the EU is working towards a future where health infrastructure can independently address challenges without relying on external aid. This approach is designed to create lasting impact and sustainable health outcomes.
