The new €5 billion Scaleup Europe Fund has made its initial disclosed investment, co-leading a €1 billion funding round for Finnish satellite company Iceye. This significant commitment underscores a strategic focus on cultivating European technology leaders, particularly within critical space technology sectors.
The investment in Iceye, a company known for its synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites, highlights the fund's ambition to back ventures that can achieve global scale. The Scaleup Europe Fund makes first investment, co-leading Iceye's €1BN round aims to foster the growth of European tech giants, positioning them competitively on the international stage.
This move follows other substantial investments in the European space sector. Recently, Portuguese space technology company Neuraspace lands €15.6M to expand AI space intelligence platform for its AI-enabled Space Domain Awareness (SDA) and Space Traffic Management (STM) capabilities. These developments signal a broader momentum in European space tech, moving beyond traditional satellite manufacturing to advanced data applications and intelligence platforms.
European initiatives also support the development of satellite-based applications. The EOinTime project, for instance, focuses on satellite-based change detection and predictive monitoring of infrastructure using high-resolution data. Similarly, SPATRA aims to increase the use of satellite data in land transport, developing applications for monitoring and managing rail and road infrastructure. These projects demonstrate the practical applications of advanced space technology in addressing real-world challenges.
What this means: The Scaleup Europe Fund's first major investment reinforces Europe's commitment to nurturing its deeptech ecosystem. By injecting substantial capital into companies like Iceye, the fund aims to accelerate the growth of European champions in strategic sectors, ensuring the continent remains at the forefront of global technological innovation, particularly in space.
