Nebius, an AI infrastructure provider based in Amsterdam, is seeking to raise $4.5 billion through convertible notes. This substantial financing round is intended to support the considerable costs associated with compute and data centre build-out across Europe. The move underscores the intense capital demands within the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure sector.

The drive for robust AI infrastructure is evident across Europe. A UK AI startup, Callosum, recently secured a $100M seed round for software infrastructure designed to enable AI workloads on diverse chips and models. Concurrently, the Swedish deeptech company Solinide Photonics raised €4M in seed funding to commercialise silicon nitride photonic integrated circuit technology for AI data centres, addressing the need for specialised components.

Investment in core data centre technology is also ongoing. The ENERGIA/PIM project, a Horizon-funded initiative, focused on accelerating data centre performance through memory chips to efficiently manage big data. Its objective was to prevent data movement between memory and processor, a structural bottleneck that contributes significantly to energy consumption in data centres. Another Horizon project, HIGHER, brought together eleven partners to develop open-source designs for high-density rack-scale systems, supporting cloud and edge services in standards-based data centre environments.

These efforts collectively highlight a concerted push to enhance the efficiency, capacity, and technological foundation of European data centres, directly aligning with the massive investment Nebius is pursuing for its infrastructure expansion.

What this means: The significant capital sought by Nebius reflects the high costs and strategic importance of building out advanced AI compute and data centre capabilities in Europe. It signals continued robust investment and development in foundational technologies required to power the next generation of AI.
