AI Tools Advance Personalised Lung Disease Treatment
European initiatives are leveraging artificial intelligence to enhance the diagnosis and treatment of lung diseases. These projects focus on transforming imaging systems into clinical decision support tools and developing AI models for patient stratification and optimised care pathways.

Artificial intelligence is poised to significantly advance lung disease diagnostics and personalised treatment within Europe. Projects like LungQ-Care are at the forefront, leveraging deeptech AI to transform innovative thoracic imaging systems into comprehensive clinical decision support systems. Supported by EIC funding, LungQ-Care aims to simplify the complex information workflow of thoracic imaging, which currently complicates personalised lung treatments. The system will enable radiologists to quantify medical imaging and disease phenotypes, providing structured analyses to lung doctors. This capability empowers clinicians to interpret medical imaging effectively and offer tailored treatments to their patients, ultimately leading to optimal outcomes. The project focuses on "Personalised treatment" and "Lung Disease" using "computerized tomography" and "Scientific computing, simulation and modelling" to achieve its goals.
Further expanding AI's role, the AI4LUNGS project is developing and validating novel AI-based tools and computational models to improve patient stratification. This initiative aims to optimise the diagnosis and treatment of both infectious and non-infectious respiratory diseases. AI4LUNGS incorporates multi-modal data and is designed to support clinicians and other stakeholders in decision-making throughout the entire patient journey, from initial suspicion to diagnosis and treatment planning. The project's keywords include "artificial intelligence," "machine learning," "computer vision," "natural language processing," and "precision medicine tools," highlighting its comprehensive approach to respiratory disease, including conditions like COVID-19, lung cancer, and interstitial disease. By streamlining these AI models into existing clinical pathways, the project aims to enhance decision-making for clinicians and other stakeholders, promising more precise, efficient, and tailored care for individuals suffering from lung conditions.
